BROKEN REFLECTIONS | Sometimes the Problem Isn’t the Event… It’s the Meaning What if the thing affecting you most isn’t actually what happened—but the meaning you attached to what happened? In BROKEN REFLECTIONS, Pastor TJ challenges us to examine the connection between the events we experience, the meaning we give those events, the emotions that follow, and ultimately the behaviors those emotions produce. EVENT → MEANING → EMOTION → BEHAVIOR We often assume our emotions are simply reactions to what happened. But sometimes we aren’t responding to the event itself—we’re responding to our interpretation of the event. A conversation happens. Someone says something. A relationship changes. A door closes. Something doesn’t go according to plan. And before we have all the information, we can create a meaning for what happened: “They don’t respect me.” “They don’t want me.” “I’m being overlooked.” “This is going to fail.” “God must not be with me.” Then that meaning begins shaping our emotions—and those emotions begin influencing our behavior. That’s where the reflection can become broken. 📖 Matthew 16:21–23 Peter gives us a powerful example. Jesus tells His disciples what is going to happen, and Peter reacts strongly. From Peter’s perspective, he may have believed he was protecting Jesus. His intentions may have even felt right. But Jesus could see something Peter couldn’t. Peter was reacting to what he thought the moment meant, while God was doing something much bigger than Peter understood. And the same thing can happen in our lives. Sometimes we are trying to fix something God is using. Sometimes we are fighting something God is allowing. Sometimes we are offended by something we misunderstood. Sometimes our first reaction feels completely justified—until we receive more information. So the question becomes: What if your reaction is based on a broken reflection? What if the event didn’t change—but the meaning you assigned to it needs to? What could change in your marriage, your family, your friendships, your leadership, your workplace, your faith, and your relationship with God if you learned to examine the meaning before reacting to the moment? REFLECTION QUESTIONS 1. Have you ever reacted strongly to something—only to realize later that what you thought was happening wasn’t actually what was happening? What changed when you got more information? 2. What is one situation in your life right now where the meaning you’ve attached to it may be affecting how you feel or how you’re responding? Could there be another way to interpret it? 3. Like Peter, you may think you’re protecting, fixing, or doing the right thing—but where might your reaction be getting in the way of what God is trying to do in your life? What would your next move look like if you responded from faith instead of your first reaction? Broken things can still reflect perfect light. The goal isn’t to pretend that painful things didn’t happen. It’s to allow God to reveal whether the meaning we’ve attached to those experiences is producing a distorted reflection. Before you react… Examine the event. Question the meaning. Recognize the emotion. Choose the response. THE ONE NOT DIAGNOSED | Dr. Eric Thomas Some of the most dangerous conditions are the ones we never recognize. We know when something around us is broken. We can identify problems in other people. We can point to circumstances, relationships, disappointments, and frustrations—but what happens when the real issue is somewhere we haven't looked? The heart. In “The One Not Diagnosed,” Dr. Eric Thomas continues the Know My Heart message by challenging us to stop treating the symptoms while ignoring the source. Scripture tells us: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts.” — Psalm 139:23 The Bible describes the heart as the center of our desires, motives, intentions, affections, and will. And according to Proverbs 4:23, the issues of life flow from it. That means our reactions have a source. Our attitudes have a source. Our anger has a source. Our jealousy has a source. Jeremiah 17 warns us that the heart can be deceptive—which means something can be operating inside of us without us fully recognizing it. We can call it personality when God calls it pride. We can call it protecting our peace when God may be confronting unforgiveness. We can blame someone for making us angry while God asks why their actions have that much control over what happens inside of us. That's why David's prayer wasn't, “God, search them.” It was: SEARCH ME. SHOW ME. CLEAN ME. God doesn't expose the heart simply to reveal what's wrong. He reveals it so He can transform it. A bitter heart eventually affects relationships. A prideful heart eventually rejects correction. An insecure heart eventually sabotages opportunities. But when God changes the root, different fruit begins to grow. This message is an invitation to stop asking God only to change our circumstances, habits, behavior, or results—and give Him permission to address the place those things are coming from. Because sometimes we're trying to fix the fruit while God is trying to heal the root.
